Cabinets are an important feature of any home. Playing both aesthetic and functional roles, cabinets need to be secure, safe, and easy to use. For the do-it-yourself individual, installing cabinets can save money. Installing new cabinets is a great way to give kitchens or bathrooms a newly renovated look. Here are some tips for successful cabinet installation:

  1. Mark the studs: A good stud finder will pinpoint the edge and center of studs behind the wall. Draw a line where the cabinet will go and be sure it is level. Install a ledger board to help support the weight of hanging cabinets during installation.
  2. Screw in cabinets: Have all electrical lines marked before starting so you can avoid them. Begin with hanging cabinets and measure that they are plumb and level before installing. Use the ledger board you already installed to provide support.
  3. Install base cabinets: Make sure the floor is level before installing base cabinets. If the floor isn’t level, start at the highest end of the room and work down to avoid trimming the bottom of cabinets. Use shims to keep cabinets level and a stud finder to secure base cabinets into studs. Re-check that the cabinet is level after securing it to a wall.
